Racing a 2003 Audi A4 Avant in the USTCC East
Mike McLaughlin is the driver and team owner of Mike Tries Motorsports, competing in the United States Touring Car Championship (USTCC) East division. Mike currently finds himself behind the wheel of a 2003 Audi A4 Avant.
Mike has been racing since 2005, starting in autocross with the SCCA's Susquehanna Region. In 2006, he was introduced to Summit Point Motorsports Park with their Friday At The Track (FATT) program, and later to EMRA where he began competing in Time Trials. Mike spent time competing in time trials and instructing with FATT over the years before taking some time off to start a family. He returned to the sport in 2021, determined to race wheel-to-wheel, and joined USTCC in 2025.

The B6-generation Audi A4 Avant is a "unique" choice in touring car racing. While wagons aren't the typical race car, the Avant brings its own advantages to the track — the longer wheelbase aids stability, and the Audi chassis provides a solid platform for competitive racing... is what Mike keeps telling himself. Plus, a fellow driver suggested that Mike build a car that was "more interesting" this go around, and Mike just thought a wagon would be hilarious.
Prepared to USTCC regulations, this A4 Avant stands out on the grid as one of the most "distinctive" cars in the series. It's a testament to the spirit of touring car racing — where everyday cars become racing machines. Plus, have you seen how many tires can fit in the trunk? That thing is huge!
America's longest-running touring car racing series. Professional touring car competition at an accessible level.
